ABSTRACT

BACKGROUNDHemoptysis is a significant clinical entity with high morbidity and potential mortality. Both medical management (in terms of resuscitation and bronchoscopic interventions) and surgery have severe limitations in these patients population. Bronchial artery embolization (BAE) represents the first-line treatment for hemoptysis. This article discusses clinical analysis, embolization approach, outcomes and complications of BAE for the treatment of hemoptysis.

METHODSA retrospective analysis of 344 cases, who underwent bronchial arteriography at Tianjin Haihe Hospital between 2006 and 2013. Several aspects of outcome were analyzed: Demographics, clinical presentation, radiographic studies, results, complications and follow-up of BAE.

RESULTSThree hundred and forty-four consecutive patients underwent bronchial arteriography, 336 of 344 patients (97.7%) performed BAE; there were 1530 coils for 920 arteries embolized; the main responsible sources for bleeding were right bronchial artery (29.7%), left bronchial artery (21.6%), combined right and left bronchial trunk (18.4%), right intercostal arteries (13.3%); 61 patients (17.7%) had recurrent hemoptysis within 1 month after undergoing BAE, 74 patients (21.5%) had recurrent hemoptysis over 1 month after undergoing BAE; The common complications of BAE included subintimal dissection, arterial perforation by a guide wire, fever, chest pain, dyspnea, etc. The follow-up was completed in 248 patients, 28 patients had been dead, 21 patients still bleed, 92 patients had lost to follow-up.

CONCLUSIONSThe technique of BAE is a relatively safe and effective method for controlling hemoptysis . The complications of BAE are rare. Although the long-term outcome in some patients is not good, BAE may be the only life-saving treatment option in patients who are poor surgical candidates.

ABSTRACT

Southeast Asia remains a critical region for the emergence of novel and/or zoonotic influenza, underscoring the importance of extensive sampling in rural areas where early transmission is most likely to occur. In 2008, 800 adult participants from eight sites were enrolled in a prospective population-based study of avian influenza [AI] virus transmission where highly pathogenic avian influenza [HPAI] H5N1 virus had been reported in humans and poultry from 2006 to 2008. From their enrollment sera and questionnaires, we report risk factor findings for serologic evidence of previous infection with 18 AI virus strains. Serologic assays revealed no evidence of previous infection with 13 different low-pathogenic AI viruses or with HPAI avian-like A/Cambodia/R0404050/2007[H5N1]. However, 21 participants had elevated antibodies against avian-like A/Hong Kong/1073/1999[H9N2], validated with a monoclonal antibody blocking ELISA assay specific for avian H9. Although cross-reaction from antibodies against human influenza viruses cannot be completely excluded, the study data suggest that a number of participants were previously infected with the avian-like A/Hong Kong/1073/1999[H9N2] virus, likely due to as yet unidentified environmental exposures. Prospective data from this cohort will help us better understand the serology of zoonotic influenza infection in a rural cohort in SE Asia

ABSTRACT

Object To explore the regularity of recipe composition by observing different bacteriostasis among compositions of Gegen Qinlian Decoction (GQD) against Streptococcus pneumoniae. MethodsTo evaluate the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 15 decoctions through double fold dilution method. Results Not all of the decoctions are of the same MIC. Conclusion Not all of the 15 decoctions have the same bacteriostasis against S. pneumoniae. Among the four herbs of GQD Coptis chinensis Franch. has the strongest bacteriostasis and the next Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi. While Glycyrrhina wralensis Fisch and Pueraria lobata (Willd.) Ohwi have no bacteriostasis, but they can influence the bacteriostasis of C. chinensis and S. baicalensis when combinating with them.

ABSTRACT

Objective To prepare recombinant human monoclonal antibody Fab fragments specific to the surface antigen of Entamoeba histolytica. Methods Total RNA was isolated from lymphocytes which were separated from an asymptomatic E. histolytica cyst carrier. The genes of IgG light chain and Fd region of heavy chain were amplified by a reverse transcriptase PCR and ligated with a plasmid vector. After the genes were introduced into Escherichia coli, the clones expressing Fab fragments specific to the surface antigen of E. histolytica were screened and the product was purified. Results Thirty thousand clones were screened and one of them was proved positive to the surface antigen of E. histolytica. Conclusion This study demonstrated that the bacterial system can be used to produce recombinant human monoclonal antibody Fab fragments specific to the surface antigen of E. histolytica and they may be applicable for the future diagnosis and treatment of the infection.

ABSTRACT

AIM To explore the effects of sinomenine (Sin) on psychic dependence induced by morphine (Mor) in mice and its relation to the cAMP content of the cerebral cortex. METHODS A biased procedure induced the strong place preference. The effect of Sin (10, 30, 60 mg?kg -1 , ip) on the rewarding property of morphine was observed in a conditioned place preference(CPP) paradigm in mice,at the same time, the change of cAMP content in cerebral cortex was measured by the radioimmunoassay(RIA). RESULTS Sin significantly shortened the time of staying in morphine-pair compartment and lowered the cAMP level of mice. CONCLUSION Sin could attenuate effects of psychical dependence induced by Mor, its mechanism may be related to decrease of cAMP level in the brain, and Sin did not display psychical dependence in the experiment.

ABSTRACT

AIM To investigate the effects of polydatin on mouse hepatocyte injury induced by hydrogen peroxide(H 2O 2). METHODS Mouse hepatocytes were prepared. SOD activity, MDA content, GSH level, GSH-px activity, glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (ALT), nitric oxide(NO) and nitric oxide synthase(NOS) were determined with different method, respectively. RESULTS After 1 h incubation, the mouse hepatocytes with various concentrations of polydatin (0 05, 0 1, 0 5, 1, 2, 4 mmol?L -1 ), significantly decreased the contents of NO and MDA, inhibited the NOS activity, increased the activities of SOD and GSH-px, suppressed the consumption of GSH, and reduced the elevated ALT level in the supernatant induced by H 2O 2. CONCLUSION Polydatin can protect hepatocytes from oxidative injury induced by H 2O 2.
